27 March 2025

The sport and exercise science students recently visited the English Institute of Sport (EIS) in Sheffield, a premier facility renowned for its state-of-the-art training environments.

This iconic venue serves as the home base for several elite teams, including the Team GB Boxing Academy and the Team GB Paralympic Teams for Badminton, Table Tennis, and Wheelchair Basketball. Additionally, it is the training ground for the Sheffield Steelers Ice Hockey Team and has previously hosted renowned athletes such as Anthony Joshua, Jessica Ennis-Hill, and Nicola Adams during their training regimens.

During the visit, the students participated in engaging and informative activities, utilising both the indoor athletics track and the ice rink at Ice Sheffield. This hands-on approach allowed them to gain practical experience and deepen their understanding of the demands of high-performance sports.

As part of the tour, the group was privileged to observe current Paralympic athletes in badminton and table tennis, as well as future Team GB boxers, during their rigorous training sessions. These athletes demonstrated extraordinary skill, resilience, and commitment, providing an inspiring display of athleticism.

The training sessions were expertly led by elite Team GB coaches, many of whom took the time to interact with the students, elaborating on the advanced training techniques and methodologies being applied. This interaction offered valuable insights into the strategies employed by top athletes to enhance their performance and effectively prepare for competition.

Witnessing elite disabled athletes in action highlighted the essential medical and physiotherapy support they receive. The students learned about the comprehensive care systems in place to optimise athletic performance and ensure the well-being of these top-tier competitors.

Overall, this trip provided the sport and exercise science students with invaluable insights into various career opportunities within elite sports, as well as a deeper appreciation for the advanced facilities and resources that underpin the success of high-level athletes.
